Canyoning du Groin

Close to Grenoble, in the Bugey massif, discover the magnificent Groin canyoning site at Artemare in the Ain department. The Groin canyon is easily accessible from Lyon or Chambéry.

Le Groin canyoning is suitable for all levels, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced canyoneer. You’ll discover breathtaking scenery, with towering rock faces and crystal-clear waters. You’ll also have the chance to go down natural slides, jump into clear-water pools and abseil down dizzying waterfalls.

The lights in the Groin canyon are splendid thanks to its very narrow gorge, where only a few rays of light penetrate to the bottom of the gorge. Ambiance and light shows guaranteed!

Canyoning is great fun, with lots of jumps and a few thrilling passages, such as the many easy but obligatory siphons that make the Groin canyon one of France’s most exceptional sites.

Some of the other passages are almost caving-like, as you move around in near-darkness at times. In fact, the Groin canyon is one of the steepest in France, in places 30m deep and only 3m wide.

To round off this Groin canyon, the last two basins offer some very fine jumps, one of which is 12 metres long and reserved for the bravest of climbers! (jumps are never compulsory). You’ll be able to do as many jumps as you like at the end of the course, and take some souvenir photos/videos!

A typical outing in the Groin canyon

Halfway between Annecy and Chambéry, this superb canyon in the Bugey massif is a very good choice. The Groin canyon is very aquatic and offers many jumps in a marked drop.
After making your reservation on our Terra Nova Canyoning website or by telephone, we will send you an e-mail with all the information, in return we will need the height and weight of all participants. The canyon is less than an hour from Lyon and only 35 minutes from Chambéry.

On site, you’ll find your instructor in the parking lot just opposite the Valromey college.
He’ll be waiting for you and will give you your equipment. The parking lot is shaded, so you won’t suffer too much from the heat when you set up. Once everyone is equipped, we’ll take your cars back up to the start of the canyon du groin, so the walk will be very short – just 30 metres or so.

In the upper parking lot, we’ll give you a safety briefing and discuss your experience and wishes with you. During the briefing, we’ll focus on jumping techniques and the necessary precautions, because in the Groin canyon, many obstacles can be jumped, and the jumps can be high, even if they’re never compulsory. You really need to remain humble and not overestimate yourself if you want everything to go smoothly.
If you don’t make the 1st jump, don’t be sorry, the last basins in the Groin canyon allow you to go back up to make new jumps and train progressively for the next descent.

Once the briefing is over, the canyon begins with a bang.
Your instructor will guide you through the canyon, advising you on your jumps and adapting the obstacles to your individual needs.

At the end of the canyon, a 5-minute walk takes us back to the parking lot below. By then, you’ll have traversed the mythical Groin Canyon, and you’ll be eager to return. We’ll send you photos of your outing so you can share your memories with friends.

The descent of the Groin is an intense descent, but with little verticality. If you feel like it, you can choose the Ecouges canyon for a future outing, with higher abseils, while still retaining the grandiose, fun aspect. On the other hand, if you want an even more aquatic canyon, the Gorges de Chailles canyon is not far away!
