Canyoning Écouges, Upper section

This part of the Ecouges canyoning trip in Isère is reserved for people who have already done at least 2 canyoning trips, and is more challenging than the lower part, with numerous abseiling descents.

    Description Upper Canyon des Écouges

The first part of the Ecouges canyon (known as the upper section) is very vertical and reserved for experienced climbers. The steep canyon plunges into a very deep gorge, with a succession of abseils and basins in a very aquatic, mineral atmosphere.

The first abseils take us through a huge chaos of boulders to the level of the gas tributary, where the gorge narrows. A huge 63-metre abseil with an unobstructed view over the valley takes you to the foot of the famous waterfall , visible from Saint Gervais in Isère.

If you’ve never done canyoning before, we recommend you try the lower part of the Ecouges canyon, which is more fun. This section is perfect for families and mixed groups – unforgettable sensations and memories!

For more experienced canyoning enthusiasts, Terranova offers canyoning courses in the Vercors, Isère and Chartreuse regions, as well as in Italy and Switzerland!

How will your outing in the upper part of the Ecouges canyon unfold?

You’ve chosen to descend the mythical Ecouges canyon in the Vercors massif of Isère, between the towns of Grenoble and Valence. You’ve chosen the upper part of the Ecouges canyon, a very steep and technical section reserved for those with previous canyoning or abseiling experience. We’ll be in touch by phone to discuss this with you and find out what your expectations are for this outing.
We’ll then send you an e-mail with the GPS location of the Ecouges parking lot. This e-mail will also contain a list of the equipment you’ll need for canyoning and a link for you to enter your height and weight so that we can bring you the right equipment.

We’ll meet at the parking lot on D-Day to get equipped and prepare our rope bags.
We’ll then take your cars to the upper parking lot of the Ecouges canyon.
Once at the top of this magnificent gorge, with a view over the whole valley between Grenoble and Valence, you can see the walnut fields that produce the Grenoble walnut.

A short briefing on progression techniques, abseiling and moving on handrails will be given by the canyoning guide. We then descend to the bottom of the gorge, where the Drevenne river flows, having for thousands of years carved out the rocky corridor that forms the Ecouges canyon.

You’ll then make a series of abseils down a very steep slope, crossing waterfalls and tumultuous pools, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The route ends at the 65m waterfall visible from the road, with many tourists stopping to watch us descend the waterfall from the bridge over the Drevenne.

At the bottom of the cascade, we’ll take 5 minutes to reach the lower parking lot, where you’ll be able to de-equip and pick up your cars. That’s the end of this half-day trip, and we’ll send you photos of your outing by WhatsApp. We’ll take the time to discuss other descents in the area with you if you wish. The second part of the canyon des Ecouges, the lower part, is great fun and makes the day complete. Then there’s the fantastic canyon du Groin, with its steep slopes that will remind you of the atmosphere in the upper part of the canyon des Ecouges.
